Using the bird list

Birds are loud, dusty, and long-lived in ways the pet-store cage card will not say. A budgie can be a reasonable first bird. A macaw is a decades-long roommate with a voice that carries through walls. The lifespan filter is the honest sort: if you cannot picture the animal in your house fifteen years from now, do not take home a cockatoo because the chick was tame this week.

Beginner-friendly means the species is commonly kept, eats a straightforward diet, and does not require a specialist the first month. It still means an avian veterinarian, not the clinic that only stocks dog vaccines. Powder-down species such as cockatiels and cockatoos bother some people's lungs. That belongs in the decision, not in a footnote after the cage is built.

Size in this list is body size, not the size of the personality. Small parrots can bite hard and scream on a schedule. Search by name, then read diet and housing before you look at color mutations. A quiet, fluffed bird on the cage floor is a same-day medical problem, described on the quiet bird page. The Association of Avian Veterinarians is the place to find a clinician who treats beaks and air sacs.

Legal notes matter for a few species. Do not assume a bird in a shop is legal to own in your state, and do not release a pet bird outdoors when the noise gets old.
