The hopping parrot
Caiques are the stocky South American parrots that bounce instead of walking. White-bellied and black-headed birds are the two species people keep. Adults are about 9 to 10 inches. Lifespan is about 25 to 40 years. Care is intermediate to advanced. The videos of caiques rolling on their backs are real. So is the bite from a bird that was overstimulated or hormonal.
A cage of at least 24 by 24 by 30 inches is only a minimum. They use every inch and then want the play stand. Pellets, vegetables, fruit, and some nuts are the diet. They are prone to getting fat if the nuts never stop. Sleep matters. A caique that gets short nights gets sharper. Two caiques can play or they can fight. Introduce only if you can separate them the same day.
Energy is the care level
Someone has to be the wrestling partner, with rules, for years. A cage in an office while everyone is in meetings is a bad match. Captive-bred birds are the ones to buy. An avian vet from AAV should know you before a toe is bitten or a crop slows down. Quiet and fluffed is the quiet bird pattern.
