What is the best insurance for this breed?

Degenerative myelopathy is a late neurologic cost for Pembroke and Cardigan corgis. A SOD1 copy count is a risk marker, not a diagnosis, and it is not automatically a pre-existing exclusion. A von Willebrand result that already shows a bleeding tendency can be excluded as pre-existing. An OFA hip report dated before enrollment is an orthopedic finding the policy can treat as pre-existing.

Should I do genetic testing?

Pembroke Welsh corgis are screened for degenerative myelopathy with the SOD1 risk variant and for von Willebrand disease type 1 by DNA, plus hip films and an eye exam. Two SOD1 copies raise the chance of myelopathy years later. They are not a diagnosis, and plenty of one-copy dogs stay sound. Cardigan Welsh corgis add progressive retinal atrophy (rcd3) to that list. A page that says only 'corgi' should not treat those as the same dog. Ask which corgi you have, then ask for that breed's OFA CHIC screens.

Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis carry a long back and short legs, and intervertebral disc disease is the injury that follows jumping off the couch. Keep the dog lean, use a ramp, and carry a painful dog with the back supported. Degenerative myelopathy is a DNA test in many Pembroke lines. Hip dysplasia still shows up. Weight control is the daily medical treatment you can actually do at home.
