Recommended for Winter White Dwarf Hamsters

Take this as a general baseline, your exotic vet can narrow it down to what suits your Winter White's actual health picture and daily habits.

A dwarf that might go white

Winter white hamsters, Phodopus sungorus, weigh about 1 to 2 ounces and live roughly 1.5 to 2 years. They are nocturnal and quick. The cage needs floor space, a solid wheel, and bedding deep enough to burrow. Tubes that are too narrow are a stuck-hamster story.

People argue about pairs. The safe advice is that a single winter white lives a normal life, and a pair only works with space, a shared upbringing, and a second cage ready. Blood on the bedding ends the experiment. They are not Syrians, and they are not Roborovskis. Name the species when you buy one.

Diabetes stories and real diarrhea

Winter whites are less associated with the diabetes talk that follows Campbell's hamsters, and they still get obese on sunflower seed. A seed mix as the whole diet is how cheek pouches fill and bodies fail. Diarrhea is urgent. VCA has small-mammal feeding notes worth reading. A night of uneaten food is the appetite page.

Winter white hamster questions

Do they turn white?

In short daylight some do, from gray to white. A warm, brightly lit room may keep the summer coat. A coat change is not illness. A bald patch is.

Can they live with a Campbell's hamster?

Hybrids happen and they are not a project to start. House winter whites with winter whites if you house them together at all, and be ready to separate them.

Are they good for kids?

They are small, fast, and asleep when school gets out. They bite when grabbed. A child can help clean a cage. The child should not be the handler who picks the hamster up for fun.

A stripe that fades when the days shorten

Phodopus sungorus carries a dark dorsal stripe in the summer coat, and under a short photoperiod that stripe fades as the fur turns white, which is the change this hamster is named for. Phodopus campbelli, the Campbell's hamster, is a separate species that keeps a stripe and is the animal behind much of the pet-trade diabetes talk. Hybrids of the two get sold as unnamed dwarf hamsters. Buy a winter white whose seller can say the species, and keep any companion inside that species, with a spare cage if they draw blood. Floor space, a solid wheel, and deep bedding are the setup for a 1 to 2 ounce animal that lives about 1.5 to 2 years.
