The tiny one that vanishes
Roborovski hamsters, Phodopus roborovskii, are about 1.5 to 2 inches and the longest-lived of the common pet hamsters when things go well, sometimes past 3 years. They are desert animals from Mongolia and China. They bolt. A hand that cups too slowly is a hand they launch from. Watch them in a big enclosure. That is the fun.
They are nocturnal. A child who wants to play at 4 p.m. will be disturbing a sleeping animal. Deep bedding for burrows matters more than a lookout loft. They do not need a friend the way a rat does, and a badly matched pair is a fight you will hear at midnight.
Wet tail is not a brand name
Diarrhea in a hamster is an emergency, whatever the pet store called it. Teeth still overgrow. A hamster that looks "fine" and is lighter in the hand is not fine. You can get one to take food from your hand. Many never enjoy being held. If the dream is a pocket hamster, choose a Syrian and still expect a nocturnal animal.
Can they live together?
Same-sex pairs or small groups sometimes work if they grew up together and the cage is large. Fights still happen. A wounded hamster has to be separated the night you notice blood.
How much space?
At least 450 square inches of floor, and more is better. A colorful tube kit from a toy aisle is not that. They run a long way on a solid wheel.
