A Maltipoo is a Maltese crossed with a toy or miniature poodle. Lifespan averaging 12-16 years is a long time to comb a coat that mats to the skin. Adult weight is not a breed standard. Ask what each parent weighed. The Maltese side brings tear staining and a white coat that shows dirt and sunburn. The poodle side brings a curly or wavy coat and the same crowded teeth. Hypoallergenic is a sales word. Dander is still there. Lifespan averaging 12-16 years is the comb, the dental, and the knees, not a low-work decade.

The mix does not cancel the parents' diseases. Luxating patellas, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, progressive retinal atrophy, and crowded teeth are already on this page's list because both breeds contribute them. A puppy from untested parents is not a blank slate. Ask for the poodle parent's patella grade and eye exam, and for the size of both dogs, before you pay for a color.

Daily life is the coat, the teeth, and a short walk, not a hike. A missed week of combing becomes a shavedown and a skin infection. A missed year of dental work becomes extractions under anesthesia in a toy dog. Plan the groomer and the dental before the puppy is cute enough to postpone both.

Temperament & Personality

Maltipoos are known for their charming personalities.

Affectionate and playful does not mean a Maltipoo is sturdy. Puppies and very small adults can develop hypoglycemia if they skip a meal: wobbling, weakness, or a puppy that will not eat needs sugar on the gums and a vet. White shaker syndrome, tremors in small white dogs, is a vet visit, not a video. Portosystemic shunts, a liver bypass, show up in both parent breeds. A puppy that stays small, heads-presses, or seems drunk after eating needs imaging, not a smaller bowl.

Maltipoos can inherit health conditions from either parent breed.

Watch the kneecaps, the eyes, the gums, and the appetite. A skip in the hind leg is the patella until a vet says otherwise. A mouth that smells is dental disease. A puppy that fades at lunchtime may be low on blood sugar. Those are the checks, not a general promise to pay attention.

A DNA panel is useful after you know the parents. It does not replace an eye exam or a patella score on the poodle parent. Progressive retinal atrophy and other named risks can be in the mix. Use the test to ask the vet what to recheck, and still brush the teeth and comb the coat. A panel does not groom the dog.

A senior Maltipoo often needs the dental that was postponed and a slower walk if a kneecap or the heart is the limit. Weigh the dog monthly. A coat that hides the ribs also hides weight gain, and extra weight makes a loose patella hurt sooner. Ask the vet to listen to the heart at each visit. Small dogs develop valve disease as they age.
