How the Calculator Works
This calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula, which is the standard veterinary method for calculating pet caloric needs:
- RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75
- This base value is then multiplied by factors for age, activity, body condition, and neutering status
- Puppies and kittens need more calories (up to 2-3x RER)
- Senior pets typically need fewer calories
- Active working dogs may need significantly more
Important Feeding Tips
For Dogs
- Divide meals: Feed adult dogs 2 meals per day, puppies 3-4 meals
- Monitor weight: Weigh monthly and adjust portions as needed
- Treats count: Treats should be no more than 10% of daily calories
- Fresh water: Always provide clean, fresh water
- Transition slowly: Change foods gradually over 7-10 days
For Cats
- Multiple small meals: Cats do better with 3-4 small meals or puzzle feeders
- Wet food benefits: Helps with hydration, important for urinary health
- Don't free-feed: Measured portions prevent obesity
- Variety: Rotating proteins can prevent food allergies
