A small rabbit with a wool wig
Lionheads weigh about 2.5 to 3.75 pounds and often live 7 to 10 years. Pellets are a measured handful. Vegetables are a side. Fruit is a rare treat. The mane does not change that. A rabbit fed mostly pellets and carrots is a dental and a stasis case in progress.
They need room to hop, a litter box, and a floor that is not wire. Cages sold as "rabbit starter kits" are usually a crate you would not leave a cat in. Exercise for several hours a day is the housing plan, or a pen that is already that large.
Teeth, guts, and a mat
Cheek teeth overgrow and the rabbit drools. The gut stops when pain or a bad diet slows it. No droppings and no interest in hay is an emergency the same day. ASPCA rabbit notes are worth reading before the first missed meal. The not-eating page applies the hour you notice.
Lionhead rabbit questions
How often do you groom a lionhead?
Several times a week, and daily when the mane is shedding. Mats pull on skin. A heavily matted rabbit may need a vet to clip the coat, because rabbit skin tears under household clippers.
Can a lionhead live alone?
Rabbits are social. A bonded pair is the better life if you can neuter and introduce them properly. A single rabbit with a person who actually sits on the floor can work. A single rabbit in a hutch cannot.
What is GI stasis?
The gut slows and the rabbit stops eating and producing droppings. It is painful and it kills. Syringe-feeding and a vet the same day are the response, not a wait to see if the rabbit 'perks up.'
Decision Guides for Lionhead Rabbit
The mane can become a wool block
Lionheads were developed in Belgium in the 1990s, a small rabbit of about 2.5 to 3.75 pounds with a wool mane around the head. That mane sheds into the hay, and a rabbit that swallows the wool can form a gastric trichobezoar. An exotic veterinarian treats that mass as a gastrointestinal stasis emergency the day the droppings stop. Brushing the mane several times a week lowers the amount of wool available to eat. Hay stays the main food, pellets stay a measured handful, and a wire floor is the wrong surface under a rabbit this light. A bonded pair after neuter and a careful introduction is the social plan that matches a herd animal.
Hay is the diet.
