American guinea pigs are the short, smooth-coated cavies, the oldest pet variety of a species domesticated in the Andes. They weigh about 1.5 to 2.5 pounds, live roughly 5 to 7 years, and pop straight up in the air when they are pleased. That jump is delight, not a seizure. Activity is moderate. Company is not optional.
Hay, peppers, and a second pig
Unlimited grass hay, a measured pellet made for guinea pigs, and a daily pile of vitamin C-rich vegetables such as bell pepper. They cannot synthesize vitamin C. A diet of old pellets and carrots will make a scurvy pig that looks "lazy." Water in a bottle and a bowl if you can keep the bowl clean. Avoid cedar bedding. Use paper or aspen and a hide they can both fit in, or two hides so nobody gets trapped.
The quick facts minimum is 7.5 square feet for one and 10.5 for two. Take the two-pig number. Same-sex pairs introduced on neutral ground, or a neutered male with a female, are the stable combinations. Two intact males sometimes work and sometimes fight. Intact males and females produce a litter you did not budget for. Guinea pig gestation is long and pups are born furred, which surprises people who thought they had time.
Breathing, stones, and kids
Upper respiratory infections move fast. Clicking, crusted eyes, or a pig hunched and not eating is a same-day vet visit. Bladder stones are common. Blood in the urine or a pig straining and crying needs imaging, not a diet guess from a forum. Find a clinic that sees exotics. The VCA guinea pig pages are a solid overview of scurvy and respiratory disease.
They suit families who will sit on the floor and offer hay, including careful children. They do not suit a single starter cage on a dresser. A pig that stops eating is an emergency in the same way a rabbit is; read the not-eating guide and use the checker. A proper cage, a pair, and the first hay supply often cost $150 to $350, then vegetables every week for years.
Guinea pig vitamin C and company
Why is vitamin C a daily issue?
Guinea pigs cannot make their own. Without fresh greens or a stabilized supplement, they develop scurvy: painful joints, rough coat, and a pig that stops moving. Pellets lose vitamin C as they sit, so buy small bags and feed vegetables.
Can one guinea pig live alone?
They should not. Social needs on this page are very high. A same-sex pair, or a neutered male with a female, is the usual plan. One pig in a quiet room is a welfare problem, not a space-saving tip.
How much space?
At least 7.5 square feet for one and 10.5 for two, as a minimum. Bigger grids or a C&C cage beat a pet-store starter box they can barely turn around in.
How long do they live?
Often 5 to 7 years. The American is the short-coated variety of the same species as every other pet guinea pig, Cavia porcellus.
