Name the tegu before you trust the temperament

Tegu in pet shops usually means an Argentine black-and-white tegu, Salvator merianae. Colombian tegus and red tegus are different animals with different attitudes. Length runs 3 to 4.5 feet for many females and 4 to 5 feet or more for males, they commonly reach 15 to 20 years or more, and care is intermediate to advanced. The dog-like label fits some Argentine adults that were handled well. It is a marketing word if the cage is still a 40-gallon tank.

Adults need at least the 8 by 4 by 4 foot enclosure listed, with a basking surface at the hot end of a 75 to 110°F gradient, humidity of 60 to 80 percent, and deep substrate. UVB is part of the build. Argentine tegus eat whole prey, insects, fruit, and vegetables. Colombian tegus lean more toward meat. Calcium and variety matter. Many Argentine tegus slow down and brumate. Plan that season. Do not panic and force-feed a healthy animal that is cooling off on schedule, and do not ignore a thin animal that is actually sick.

A locked room, not a couch pet

They are intelligent and they are strong. A tame tegu still bites during a feeding mistake and still should not wander a kitchen. Salmonella is a handwashing issue. Build the adult cage before the baby arrives. Captive-bred only. Have a reptile vet already. ARAV is the list. Repeated refusal outside brumation season belongs on the not-eating page.

Tegu questions

Which tegu is the calmer pet?

Argentine black-and-white tegus, Salvator merianae, are the ones people call dog-like. Colombian tegus, Tupinambis teguixin, are often more defensive. Red tegus are another Salvator. The receipt should name the species.

Do Argentine tegus brumate?

Many do. Appetite and activity drop in the cooler months. A true brumation should be a planned cool-down for a healthy animal, not a forgotten lizard in a cold room.

What do they eat?

Argentine tegus are omnivores: whole prey, insects, fruit, and vegetables. That mix is the diet to actually feed. A diet of only fatty meat makes a sick adult.
