The spotted shell is a grazing animal

Leopard tortoises, Stigmochelys pardalis, are the big African tortoises with the spotted carapace. Adults commonly reach 10 to 18 inches and a surprising weight. Lifespan is 50 to 100 years. People buy them as palm-sized babies and meet the adult a few years later, when the indoor tub is already too small.

They graze. Mixed grass, hay, and broadleaf weeds are the diet. Fruit, dog food, and bean-heavy bowls push fast, lumpy growth. Calcium and UVB, or real sun, build the shell. Humidity of 40 to 60 percent is a fair range. Growing animals still use a humid hide. A shell that looks like a pyramid is a husbandry problem already in progress.

Pen first, tortoise second

Plan an outdoor pen or at least an 8 by 4 foot indoor space. Care is intermediate. Build the pen before the animal arrives: walls the tortoise cannot see over and climb, a hide, a water dish it can exit, and shade plus a hot spot in the 90s. In cold climates the indoor winter setup needs UVB and room heat. They do not brumate the way Mediterranean tortoises do. A cool garage is not a winter plan.

Buy captive-bred. These tortoises are protected in the wild. A soft shell, a discharge from the nose, or a week without food is a veterinary visit. Clinics are listed at ARAV.

How big do leopard tortoises get?

A typical adult is 10 to 18 inches. Females are often the larger ones. A hatchling in a tub becomes a yard animal.

Can leopard tortoises live indoors?

A baby can, with UVB and a lot of floor. An adult needs an outdoor pen or a room-sized indoor area, about 8 by 4 feet at the minimum, and more is better.

What should a leopard tortoise eat?

Grass, weeds, and hay. Fruit is occasional at most. A salad of iceberg and berries is a poor stand-in for grazing.
