Loyal, heavy, and particular

Akitas stand about 24 to 28 inches and weigh 70 to 130 pounds. Lifespan is often 10 to 14 years. They are dignified and attached to their family. Exercise is moderate and the shed is not. Twice a year the coat comes out in clumps, and the rest of the year it still comes out. Training has to start while you can still hold the leash.

They can be good with children they know. They are a risky roommate for strange dogs. Cats are a maybe, if the puppy grew up with them. A dog park is the wrong hobby. A hike with you is the right one.

Skin, eyes, thyroid, stomach

Sebaceous adenitis, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and bloat are the health conversation. A puppy eye exam and hip scores on the parents are the minimum questions. An Akita that retches and swells needs surgery, not a car ride after dinner to "walk it off." Merck covers hypothyroidism. Coat loss with weight gain is a reason to book bloodwork, and the itching page covers the skin half of that picture.

Akita questions

Can two Akitas live together?

Sometimes, and many same-sex pairs fight seriously as they mature. Do not buy a second Akita to keep the first company. A fight between two dogs this size is an emergency, not a scuffle.

Are they good guard dogs?

They are naturally aloof with strangers. That is not the same as a trained protection dog, and a pet Akita should not be encouraged to make its own security policy.

What is sebaceous adenitis in an Akita?

An immune skin disease that strips the coat and leaves scale. It is common enough in the breed to know the name. Treatment is long-term, with a dermatologist.
