A pair of small, busy finches

Zebra finches are the gray birds with the orange cheek and the barred chest on the male. Adults are about 4 inches. They usually live 5 to 10 years. The noise stays low, care is beginner, and a cage of at least 24 by 12 by 18 inches is only a start. That cage is a minimum for a pair. A colony needs a real flight.

Seed, greens, and cuttlebone are the diet. Egg food during a molt or when chicks appear keeps the parents from burning out. They breed if you leave a nest. If you do not want chicks, skip the nest and keep an eye on a dark corner anyway. Males sing a small buzzing song. Females do not. Handling is stress. Move them by letting them fly into a carrier, or by a gentle catch you have practiced, not by a daily grab.

Watch the floor of the cage

A finch that sits fluffed on the bottom is in trouble already. They are small and they decline fast. An avian vet who will see a finch is worth finding before that morning. AAV is the directory. The quiet bird page describes the posture, even though the patient is four inches long.

Zebra finch questions

Can I keep one zebra finch?

They are social. A single finch in a living room is a poor life. A pair, or a small group with enough space, matches the way they live. Two males may fight in a tiny cage.

Do they like to be held?

No. They startle, and a grab can kill a bird this small. Watch them in the flight cage.

How long do zebra finches live?

About 5 to 10 years. A flight cage and a varied diet are how they reach the upper end.
