Name the macaw before you buy the cage

Macaw covers Ara and a few related genera. A Hahn's or a noble macaw is a foot long. A hyacinth is a yard long and far heavier. Adults run 12 to 40 inches, they often live 50 to 80 years or more, the noise is very high, and care is advanced. Those ranges are the group, not a single bird you can shop for with one cart. Blue-and-gold and scarlet macaws have their own pages because the details diverge.

What they share is a beak that dismantles furniture, a voice that ends apartment living, and a diet of pellets, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. The cage minimum of 48 by 36 by 60 inches is a large-macaw number. A mini macaw can live in less and still needs to fly or climb every day. Talking is good, with a limited vocabulary compared with the best Amazons. Some individuals talk a lot. Many scream more than they talk.

One species, one huge plan

Get the scientific name in writing. A mixed clutch labeled only macaw is how people bring home a bird they cannot house at year ten. Captive-bred only. An avian vet from AAV should already be a phone number you have. Appetite loss and a fluffed posture are covered on the quiet bird page.

Macaw questions

Which macaw is this page about?

Several. Blue-and-gold, scarlet, green-wing, military, hyacinth, and the smaller mini macaws are all sold under the short name. Twelve to 40 inches is only the spread from a mini macaw to a hyacinth.

Do all macaws live 50 to 80 years?

50 to 80 years or more for the group. A hyacinth and a Hahn's macaw do not share one calendar or one cage. Ask which species is in the box.

Are macaws good for a first parrot?

No. Care is advanced. Noise is very high. A first parrot that screams at this volume usually becomes a rescue bird.
