A fancy rat's plan is lungs, friends, and a cage that breathes. Mycoplasma is nearly universal, so a rat that gasps or loses weight needs a vet who will use rat-safe antibiotics, not a pet-store drop. Keep at least a same-sex pair, skip wire floors, and avoid aquariums that trap ammonia. Females grow mammary tumors often enough that a new lump should be seen, not watched for a month.
Short lives, obvious personalities
Fancy rats weigh about 0.5 to 1.5 pounds and live about 2 to 3 years. They are social, trainable, and cleaner than their reputation if the cage is. A wire floor cuts feet. A tank with no airflow grows ammonia and wrecks lungs. Give space, hammocks, and a litter corner they will mostly use.
Females develop mammary tumors often enough that a new lump should be seen, not watched for a month. Males can be a bit lazier and smell stronger. Both sexes need a friend. Handling from a young age makes a shoulder rat. Grabbing a sleeping rat makes a biter.
Lungs first
Respiratory disease is the illness you will meet. Red tears are porphyrin and can mean stress or sickness, not blood. A rat that breathes with its mouth open is in trouble now. Do rats need a friend?
Yes. A lone rat is a depressed rat. Keep same-sex pairs or a neutered group. Introducing adults takes a neutral space, not a shove into the resident's cage.
Why do they honk and sneeze?
Mycoplasma is nearly universal. Some rats stay mildly snuffly. A rat that gasps, loses weight, or has a porphyrin-stained nose and eye that is worse than usual needs a vet who will use rat-safe antibiotics. Pet-store drops are not a plan.
How long do they really live?
Two to three years is honest. A rat that reaches four is old. Plan the goodbye when you buy the baby.

The mammary chain runs past the belly
Fancy rats are Rattus norvegicus, the same species as the brown rat, at about 0.5 to 1.5 pounds and a life of about 2 to 3 years. Mammary tissue in the female runs from the chin to the groin, so a lump on the neck can still be a mammary tumor. Many of those growths are fibroadenomas, and a veterinarian who treats rats is the person who separates a fibroadenoma from a malignancy, because either one can appear along that chain.
