A beginner that will eat the roommate
California kingsnakes, Lampropeltis californiae, are the banded and striped snakes of the western United States. Adults are usually 3 to 5 feet and live about 15 to 20 years. They are active, hardy, and a reasonable first snake if the buyer wants a colubrid that moves, not a ball python that hides. The failure is housing them with anything else. They kill and eat other snakes. A "community" tank is a feeding.
Give a cage at least as long as the snake, a warm side in the low to mid 80s, a cool side in the 70s, and humidity around 40 to 60 percent so sheds come off in one piece. Hides on both ends. Mice thawed to body temperature, sized to the thickest part of the body. Setup costs often land between $200 and $800. The snake itself runs from a pet-shop price into morph money.
Musk, mites, and a strong feeding response
They musk when scared. That smell washes off. A bite from a feeding response is a reason to use a hook or tongs at the door, not a reason to punish the snake. Respiratory infections look like open-mouth breathing after a cold, wet cage. Mites look like crawling specks in the water bowl. Quarantine new animals. Refusal to feed in an otherwise warm, settled snake is worth a weight check rather than a bigger mouse.

Can a California kingsnake live with another snake?
No. Kingsnakes eat snakes, including other kingsnakes. One animal per cage, fed alone, is the rule.
Are they good first snakes?
Often yes. They are active, hardy, and usually willing to eat thawed mice. They musk and they can bite when startled. That is a beginner snake, not a snake that enjoys being worn as jewelry.
