Overview

Blennies are beloved reef fish known for their big personalities, expressive faces, and entertaining behaviors. These bottom-dwelling fish have elongated bodies, often with distinctive "eyebrow" cirri (fleshy appendages) that give them a comical appearance. They spend their time perching on rocks and darting between hiding spots.

Many blennies are excellent algae grazers, making them valuable additions to reef tanks struggling with nuisance algae. Their small size, hardiness, and peaceful nature make them perfect for nano reefs and community marine tanks.

Blenny is a family, Blenniidae, not a single marine fish with one diet. The animals sold under the name run about 2 to 6 inches depending on species and live 4 to 6 years. Tank size on the card is 20 to 55 gallons or more, again by species. They come from tropical and temperate seas, and in a home reef they need 72 to 82°F, pH 8.1 to 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. A reef with readable ammonia, or nitrate past 20 ppm, loses blennies while the corals still look acceptable.

The diet line says herbivore to omnivore because the family really does split. A lawnmower blenny, Salarias fasciatus, grazes film algae and starves in a new tank that was scraped clean and then stocked with a hungry blenny on day one. A midas blenny will take prepared foods. A fang blenny bites fins and mucus and is not a cleanup animal at all. Read the species on the tag before you trust the word blenny. The care level easy applies to the common algae grazers in a mature tank, not to every fish in the family.

Some blennies are peaceful grazers and some are semi-aggressive. Most of the algae-grazing species want a hole they can back into, and two of them will fight over one favorite burrow. A lawnmower that has eaten the visible algae may start picking at coral mucus or at clam mantles. That is hunger, not a sudden change of personality. Feed nori and algae-based foods once the rocks are clean, or the fish declines while the rest of the reef still looks fed.

Diet & Feeding

Diet varies by species: People who actually study the Blenny's natural tendencies usually build deeper trust with the animal too.

Herbivorous Blennies (Lawnmower, Starry)

Omnivorous Blennies (Bicolor, Midas, Tailspot)

Lawnmower Blenny Diet Warning

Lawnmower Blennies are obligate herbivores that may starve in tanks without sufficient algae growth. Ensure adequate algae or supplement heavily with nori sheets. They often refuse other foods.

Proper nutrition for Blenny requires understanding not just what to feed, but how feeding strategies affect health, behavior, and water quality. A disciplined approach to feeding, where your Blenny receives the right amount of appropriate food at consistent intervals, is one of the most impactful things you can do for both the fish and the overall aquarium ecosystem.

Diet variety is essential for optimal Blenny health because no single commercial food provides the complete nutritional profile these fish require. Observing your Blenny's response to different food types also provides useful health information, as reduced interest in normally preferred foods is often an early indicator of illness.

Behavior & Personality

Blennies have distinctive personalities.

Blennies are not gobies. They lack the fused pelvic sucker gobies use to perch, and many species wear fleshy cirri over the eyes that look like eyebrows. They hop and perch on rock rather than hovering in open water. A lid still matters. Startled blennies leave the tank through surprisingly small gaps. A 20-gallon minimum fits a small species. A fish headed for 6 inches belongs in the upper end of the 20 to 55 gallon range, with more than one crevice.

Buy a blenny with a full belly and algae already growing in the tank it is going into. A thin lawnmower in a bare quarantine tank needs algae sheets or it wastes. Four to 6 years is a fair life for a fish that spends its day scraping rock, and it only happens when the diet matches the species. An omnivore label on a family card is not permission to feed flake to a grazer and call it done.

Feeding behavior in Blenny reveals much about their ecological role and can be leveraged by keepers to promote natural behaviors and reduce aggression. Observing when, where, and how your Blenny feeds provides diagnostic information about their comfort level, health status, and social standing. Many successful Blenny keepers use varied feeding strategies including target feeding, scatter feeding, and enrichment feeders to promote natural foraging behaviors and reduce competition-related stress.

For Blenny, prevention is always better than treatment.

Recognizing early signs of disease in Blenny requires a trained eye and consistent observation. Establishing a daily observation routine—even just a few minutes of focused attention during feeding—helps you develop a baseline understanding of what normal behavior looks like for your specific Blenny, making deviations immediately apparent.

Quarantine protocols represent one of the most impactful health management practices available to Blenny keepers. This single practice prevents the majority of disease outbreaks in established aquariums and is considered essential by virtually all experienced Blenny keepers.

Blennies Are Great For:

Blennies May Not Be Ideal For:

Aquarium keeping is a hobby of specifics, and Blenny is no exception.

If you can commit to the maintenance schedule and the initial investment in proper equipment, a Blenny is likely to reward you with an engaging, long-term addition to your aquarium.

Cost of Ownership

Planning ahead financially is one of the most practical things you can do before getting a Blenny. Blenny care costs are real and ongoing.

The true cost of keeping Blenny extends well beyond the initial purchase price and basic equipment. Many aspiring Blenny keepers underestimate these ongoing costs, which can lead to cut corners that ultimately compromise fish health and result in even greater expenses. A realistic budget that accounts for both routine maintenance and occasional replacement of equipment provides a more accurate picture of what Blenny keeping actually costs.

Heaters, filters, lights, and pumps all have finite lifespans, and their failure—particularly heater or filter failure—can have catastrophic consequences for Blenny if not addressed promptly. Many experienced Blenny keepers also invest in battery-operated air pumps and backup heaters as insurance against power outages, which can be lethal to tropical species within hours depending on ambient room temperature.

The cost-benefit analysis of quality versus budget equipment deserves careful consideration for Blenny keepers. This is particularly true for Blenny, where the animals themselves, along with any tank mates, plants, and established biological filtration, represent a significant investment of both money and time that is worth protecting with reliable equipment.
